your own DVD's for Lakeside Lodges. The area offers unrivalled opportunities for countryside and fell walks with more than 3,500 kilometres of rights of way. Most fells are open to everyone and you can cycle or ride on bridleways and by-ways. There are many free guided walks available with National Park Authority guides, as well as more specialised walks for which there is a small charge. At Derwentwater at Portinscale is a RYA recognised centre which also offers tuition at climbs, ghyll scrambles, abseils and guided hill walks. The Howtown Activity Centre by steamer pier on eastern shore of Ullswater also offers tuition, canoes, kayaks, rock climbs and ghyll scrambles. In summer months there are many local events such as sheepdog demonstrations which are held every Wednesday Keswick, flower shows, hound trails, country fairs and agricultural shows. All these varied and colourful events offer interest and entertainment to locals and visitors alike and provide an opportunity for a glimpse of old Cumbrian traditions. Keswick Climbing Wall, situated behind Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick, offers tuition in abseiling, ghyll scrambling, canoeing, rock climbing and mountain biking as well as an assault course, guided walks, farm visits and bike hire. At Rookin House Farm, Troutbeck, near Penrith, you can have a go at quad dune buggies, archery, JCB driving, clay pigeon shooting and horse rides. Pony treks is available at Park Foot, Pooley Bridge, where you can ride over Barton Fell with spectacular views of Ullswater or, nearer to Park, at Rookin House, near Ullswater. For golfers there is Keswick Golf Club, 18 holes set amidst splendid scenery at Threlkeld and Penrith Golf Centre and Driving Range with a 300 yard floodlit range and a 9 hole pay and play golf course. Fishing is available on most lakes and tarns - it is free on Ullswater and Windermere but a licence may be required on other lakes and rivers. Even non railway enthusiasts will love
elegant Victorian viaducts of Settle to Carlisle
railway set n spectacular scenery. The tiny Ravenglass
to Eskdale narrow gauge steam train runs for 7 miles
through beautiful Eskdale valley with wonderful
views of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Finally, there are several animal attractions which children will love such as Trotters and Friends, just 5 min to north of Park - a children's zoo where you can feed and pet animals as well as Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre near Cockermouth and Eden Ostrich World near Penrith.
